What is the commission process?

Commissioning Your Portrait – Step by Step

1. Initial Inquiry & Consultation

You reach out with your interest in a portrait. We’ll discuss your ideas, the subject, size, style, and any special details you’d like included. I’ll provide a quote and estimated timeline.

2. Booking & Deposit

Once you’re ready to move forward, a 50% deposit secures your spot in my schedule.

3. Photography Session

I take professional reference photos of you (or your chosen subject). This ensures I have the best lighting, angles, and expressions to capture your personality.

If in-person photos aren’t possible, we can discuss high-quality photo options you provide.

4. Concept Sketches

I create a series of preliminary sketches from the reference photos. You’ll review these and we can make adjustments before I begin painting.

5. Painting the Portrait

Working from the approved sketch, I build the painting in layers, capturing likeness, mood, and fine details. I’ll share one or two progress updates so you can see it come to life.

6. Final Reveal & Approval

Once finished, I’ll send you images of the completed work. Small adjustments can be made at this stage if necessary.

7. Payment & Delivery

After final approval, the remaining balance is due. Your portrait will be varnished for protection and is ready for pickup (or delivered if local). Shipping costs are extra.

8. Enjoy Your Artwork

Your portrait is ready to display, gift, or pass down as a treasured heirloom.

What medium do you use and why?

I use artist-quality acrylic paints because that’s what I am most experienced in and what I enjoy the most. It also reduces turnaround time.

Will you paint from a photograph I provide?

In certain cases (where the subject is deceased), a provided photo can be painted. But in all other circumstances, a photoshoot/sketching session is highly encouraged.

Do you paint Pet/Animal portraits?

Yes, I do. The same photoshoot/sketching process is involved.

Can I have the photos as well as the portrait?

The photos are taken for reference only and unavailable for sale.

Why doesn’t the portrait look EXACTLY like the photograph?

Portraits are an artistic journey that you take with the artist. A likeness is paramount so as is the style of the artist. What is being commissioned is an artistic interpretation of the subject as close to the real thing as can be achieved. Some room for interpretation is needed.

Will my portrait be posted on your website/ social media?

Not if you don’t want it to be.

A model release form will be available to sign at the photoshoot, covering whether or not you’d like your portrait (and process) shared.

What if I dislike my portrait?

We would discuss troublesome areas and work to adjust the painting.

What if nothing can be done, and I hate the portrait?

The deposit is non-refundable, and the painting would be surrendered to the artist. The final balance would not be paid.

Will you travel for a portrait?

Yes, but only when travel and accommodation are covered by the collector/client in full beforehand.

What types of payment do you accept?

I accept e-transfers and PayPal to nphoenixp@gmail.com
